WordPress and Wix are the most popular platforms for website designing and creation.
Both platforms have their own strengths and areas to improve to offer users better value for their money.
Today we will look at the pricing plans of both these platforms and uncover the hidden charges we pay to Wix and WordPress.
Hidden Charges You Pay To Wix & WordPress
I did a lot of research on the price comparisons of Wix and WordPress to determine the best deal for publishing my website.
I realised that the “TOTAL COST” that I had pay for creating a website / blog on these platforms is much more than what is shown in all advertisements.
I observed other bloggers also promote these platforms by stating only the base price.
When in reality there are always a lot of additional services which we need to buy over and above the base price’s features that inflates the final cost to be paid.
So I wanted to dive deeper into the details of each (WorkPress and Wix) to see how much money do we actually pay them to create a small business / blogging website on which we can also sell some virtual products such as e-books / virtual classes etc.

WordPress is an open platform for building websites. Open platform means it is free to use for everyone.
But to build a website using WordPress we need to purchase a domain and hosting. There are a lot of hosting services to choose from such as Dreamhost, Bluehost, Siteground.
Let us look at the pricing and the features included in the plans offered by these hosting service providers
Note that all hosting service providers offer long term pricing plans which are better than monthly ones because you get good discounts when you pay upfront for 1 / 2 / 3 years.
But if you are are undecided whether you will stick around for a longer period then please do go for the shortest tenure plans.
Key Terms and extra charges at Dreamhost

Key Terms and extra charges at SiteGround
*Domain – Note that you will need to buy your own domain.
Renewal cost at Namecheap goes up in 2nd year to $12.98.
At NamesCheap, SSL is included in the price for 1st year.
But we have to purchase SSL separately in the 2nd year.
So, in 3rd year of hosting your blog on SiteGround, cost of domain at Namecheap will be
$12.98/year + $7.88 (SSL security) + $0.18 (ICANN fee); Total $21.04
*Website Security – This is an important feature which helps protect your website from malware and malicious attacks. SiteGround offers website security via SG Site Scanner available as an Add-on @ $1.65/month billed annually
Do Note the country specific plan variations:
In India Wix offers only one single premium plan @ Rs29/month which includes 10GB storage. 1 free domain is included in this plan, but only for 1st year.
From 2nd year that domain costs $14.95/year.
In US Wix has stopped offering “Connect Domain” plan. (Change of plans and pricing remains a risk with Wix in all countries, this is one of the biggest drawbacks of Wix)
Just like WordPress Hosting companies, Wix also offers monthly as well as long term plans. You can save a lot if you chose to go with their 1 / 2 / 3 year pricing plans.
Although if you only want to try it for a few months before making a choice then you are better off with the monthly pricing plans.
Key Terms and extra charges at Wix
*Domain Included – Wix offers a free domain with all plans except Connect Domain plan.
Free domain is only offered for the first year after which the domain costs $14.95 annually.
Note that renewal cost at Namecheap for second year is $12.98.
Also, we have to purchase SSL separately in the 2nd year (SSL is free in the 1st year).
So, in 3rd year of hosting your site on Wix it is better to buy domain from Wix itself, because total cost of domain at Namecheap for 3rd year come to
$12.98/year + $7.88 (SSL security) + $0.18 (ICANN fee) ; Total $21.04
*Marketing and App Vouchers – Wix offers some marketing and app vouchers on annual or higher subscriptions.
But they come with “conditions apply” which we should not ignore before getting excited about these freebies
1. Vouchers are included only at the time of initial purchase and not during renewal.
2. Yearly or higher subscriptions of Unlimited, VIP and all Business plans offer the following vouchers:
- Available in 21 countries. Click here and hover over Select Your Country to view the full list
- Requires you to spend $25 on advertising before you can redeem the voucher
- Available 48 hours after purchase
- Valid for 2 months from the date of purchase
Now let us look at how much we will need to pay from our pocket in the 1st year and then 2nd year onwards to build our website on WordPress by choosing Dreamhost or Bluehost or Siteground V/S building our website on Wix
Dreamhost is the cheapest and best option to go for webhosting for new bloggers and website builders. It has the cheapest pricing plans even after the 2nd year renewals.
Bluehost and SiteGround are both almost similar in terms of pricing, SiteGround has got better customer support but Bluehost offers unlimited bandwidth and traffic.
Although, New bloggers will be fine with SiteGround as it can easily handle upto 10,000 website visitors per month and that is more than enough for a new website.
Wix on the other hand turns out to be much more expensive even if you look at the 1st year price so our recommendation for new website builders is to avoid wix and go for WordPress with Dreamhost Starter Plan to buy website hosting and domain.
